Etiquette Tips When Travelling to Bali

  • As one of the island’s unique attractions, entering a Hindu temple is an essential cultural activity in Bali. Don’t forget to visit this temple when you’re in Bali. Without intending to, tourists may offend the locals if they don’t understand the customs. If you plan to visit a Hindu temple, always dress modestly. It is best to cover most parts of your upper body – the shoulders and your upper arms. Guests are also expected to wear a sarong covering their waist and legs. These are usually provided at the temple entrance.
  • After visiting a temple, leave a donation – it is the right thing to do and it is good karma for you.
  • Always take off your shoes when entering a temple or someone’s home.
  • If you’re menstruating or have any open wounds, postpone your trip to the temple as this is not permitted at a sacred temple.
  • Although most people in Bali have been exposed to the Western culture, it is best to use your right hand when giving money or any items to the Balinese.
  • Do not touch people’s heads, even children’s, since the head is considered as the most sacred part of the body.
  • Do mingle with the Balinese – people in Bali are known to be friendly and welcoming.

Safety Tips When Travelling to Bali

  • Although you might see plenty of foreigners driving motorbikes with no helmets and jackets, it is recommended to use a helmet at all times. This is for your own safety and is required by law. Using a jacket will also protect you from the wind, rain, and to prevent scratches if unfortunate accidents happen.
  • Never take drugs in Bali. Drugs are taken seriously in Indonesia and carries severe penalties.
  • Get an international driver’s license if you plan to drive in Bali. If you don’t have one, you can get one in Denpasar.
  • Do make sure you have travel insurance.
  • When you’re traveling with kids, you will need to bring a lot of things. Always know what you can carry and make sure you have a secure bag to bring your items.
