The Koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) is a member of the cyprinid family species complex native to East Asia. This species actually comes from the mainland of China. Then, in the 17th century this fish were brought to Japan, known as “Nishikigoi” or The Goldfish.

This fish can lives in fresh water that is not too deep and moderate water flow. Sometimes, it can also live in brackish water. With proper care, koi fish can live up to 10-15 years!

This fish can grow to a length of 0.5-1.2 meters, with a weigh up to 15 kg. They have physical characteristics with various attractive colors. The colors such as golden yellow, orange, red with a combination of black or white. The colors make them look beautiful, catches the eye makes us want to touch it!

Diet & Behaviours

Koi eat everything in the water! From worms, algae, larvae, insects, seeds, small crustaceans and anything they can stir up from the pond’s bottom.

Just like other fish, koi reproduce by laying eggs. Male Koi can start their reproductive period at the age of 2 years while females are 3 years old. Naturally breed on their own, they tend to spawn in the spring and summer seasons from April to June. The female can produce more than 1000 eggs, and can lay in 7-14 days.
