Based on the experiences of both locals and visitors, the hike up Mount Batur varies depending on your physical condition. Some say it’s a breeze, while others find it more challenging. On average, the hike takes about 2 hours. Keep in mind, you are climbing a volcano that is 1,717 meters above sea level!

How to prepare for the climb

You’ll want to wear comfortable clothing that give you maximum mobility. Make sure you wear proper shoes made for hiking, or at least something to give you the traction you need for going off road.

You’ll also want to bring a jacket or windbreaker, along with a waterproof rucksack, extra water and snacks to keep you energized. As you’ll begin the hike in the dark, before sunrise, an invaluable tool is a simple headlamp. It makes the hike much easier as you’ll have both hands free.

Eating a wholesome breakfast is important as you’ll need all the energy you can get to make the hike.

Keep in mind this is a two-way journey – first you climb to the summit and then you descend back down.

If you anticipate getting hungry, it would be wise to pack some sandwiches and lightweight snacks.

On a closing note, don’t forget to bring your camera! The views during sunrise, and just moments after the sun breaks the horizon, are a spectacle. It will be worth all the preparation and the journey to the top of the mountain.

You can easily reach the base of Mount Batur by staying at Mara River Safari Lodge. We have a variety of different room types to accommodate all guests. Make your reservation directly through our website to get added inclusions.
