What is Nyepi?
Nyepi is a Balinese “Day of Silence” that is observed annually in Indonesia. It is a Hindu celebration marking the new year in the Balinese calendar. The word “Nyepi” itself means “to keep silent” in the Balinese language. The day is intended for self-reflection, meditation, and to bring about a sense of spiritual renewal.
Nyepi is characterized by a day of complete silence and inactivity. Many Balinese Hindus observe this day by refraining from work, entertainment, travel, and even turning off lights and making minimal noise. Before Nyepi, there are elaborate rituals and processions, including the famous “Ogoh-ogoh” parade, where large and sometimes frightening effigies are paraded through the streets to symbolize negative elements being driven away.
